Continuouspositive airway pressure (CPAP) keeps the upper airways open at all stages of the respiratory cycle. It also appears to be partially effective against central apneas.

Applying CPAP to the upper airways prevents the pharynx from collapsing during inspiration and expiration. CPAP thus acts as a pharyngeal pneumatic splint, increasing the pharyngeal cross-sectional area. In most cases, treatment has to be continued for years, and any discontinuation after the first night results in a recurrence of SAS.
